I explain what is meant by rehabilitation and then briefly review the evidence for the efficacy of rehabilitation, both in the acute phase and in the longer term. The article emphasises the need for longer term rehabilitation after discharge from the NHS neurosurgical or rehabilitation facility. There is evidence that rehabilitation will make a significant difference months or even years after the original injury and it is important that this is recognised so more people can access good quality, multidisciplinary rehabilitation in order to realise their full potential.
